Dear Carlos,

Thanks for your family mementos, and query sent to our webpage www.Narodowa.pl

Here is our help re your family ancestral home and parish:

We can tell you and confirm that your family name, and family homeland is given and confirmed by the invaluable Polish historical directory “Slownik Geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego ….” – “The Geographical Directory of the Kingdom of Poland…”, Cracow, Warsaw, 1880-1901, and in 14th tome – page 395 you can see the old historical note about your family home Zaostrowiecze, and your noble family Suszczewicz:

http://dir.icm.edu.pl/pl/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_XIV/395

ZAOSTROWIECZE

= the POLESIE old historical province of old Poland, now located in the independent Belarus, and the one of the noble families as owners of the land in the Zaostrowiecze was the family name given as “Suszczewiczowie” – and it means with Polish language and grammar Nominative – family SUSZCZEWICZ ! (the owners of the 1/4 “wloka” in this village – note the wloka was about 17 hectares of land).

The “Slownik…” is so invaluable, as it gives also the family RC church and parish! – your family SUSZCZEWICZ’s ancestral RC parish was: KLECK, although it must be noted that GC church and parish was MOROCZNA.

Here is the base historical note about this KLECK – Kletsk:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kletsk

For your rich POLISH FAMILY HISTORY BOOK also the only three next weblinks:

Kleck 1604:

Kleck 2009:

Finally, with the base info on the History of Poland, telling also about your family old Polish province POLESIE:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Poland

And your family very old and rich historical and cultural traditions were SZLACHTA – Polish Nobels, possibly named as SZLACHTA ZAGRODOWA – SZLACHTA ZASCIANKOWA, you can read general info about all Polish Nobels with Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szlachta

You can search more with internet base search engines, typing “Kleck”, “Kletsk”, and your family ancestral home name “Zaostrowiecze”, located now in the independent Belarus.

Hope this helps a bit in your search.

Good luck in your search and life,

Tad

Dear Carlos,

You asked also about the meaning and origin of the surname SUSZCZEWICZ, and here is my additional help:

According to invaluable “Nazwiska Polaków Słownik historyczno – etymologiczny” (The Surnames of Poles, the historical and etymological Directory), created by very known Etymologist Prof. Kazimierz Rymut and his team, tome II L-Ż, edited by Wydawnictwo Naukowe DWN, Kraków 2001, page 510, I can tell you my opinion:

SUSZCZEWICZ, the old Polish family name is fully noted with this directory, derived from old Polish language and nickname, calling, name SUSZA noted in Poland from the year 1204 (susza in English – a drought), and SUSZCZ – this from the old Polish local language and words: suszczeć, suszczyć ‘szeleścić’ (in English language – to dry, to rustle) – according to me the meaning of this name is the person, who has local profession specializing with drying of agricultural crops, for example with drying ‘suszka” – as from very old Polish language this word ‘suszka’ nowadays is named as konopie (a hemp in English language).

Finally, one must note the surname suffix -ewicz is tipical from this part of Europe, and it means the son of the father. Thus, in this case, it is possible that the origin of the family name SUSZCZEWICZ from the previous centuries was the family name/nickname SUSZCZ.
